Minibeasts Lesson Plan for 1st Grade Students

Topic: Minibeasts

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify different types of minibeasts and describe their characteristics.

Materials

• Pictures of different types of minibeasts
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen any minibeasts.
• Ask them to name some minibeasts they have heard of.
• Write their ideas on the chart paper.

Direct Instruction

• Show the pictures of minibeasts to the class and ask them to identify each one.
• Ask students to describe the characteristics of each minibeast.
• Ask them to name any behaviors that the minibeasts may have.

Guided Practice

• Pass out the minibeast flashcards to the students and ask them to match each one with its corresponding picture.
• Ask them to describe the characteristics of the minibeast and any behaviors that they have observed.

Independent Practice

• Ask the students to choose a minibeast to research further. They can use books or the internet to find information about their chosen minibeast.
• Have the students create a poster or presentation to share their findings with the class.

Closure

• Review the characteristics of minibeasts and the ways that they differ from larger creatures.
• Ask the students to share their posters or presentations with the class.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the sorting and classifying activity to see if they can identify minibeasts and differentiate them from larger creatures.
• Evaluate the posters or presentations to see if the students can accurately describe and illustrate minibeasts.
