1st Grade Detailed Lesson Plan About Photosynyhesis Lesson Plan (Science)

Topic: Photosynthesis

Description: Students will understand the importance of photosynthesis in creating food and oxygen.

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the fundamental process of photosynthesis and how it creates food and oxygen.

Materials

  • Images of plants undergoing photosynthesis
  • Diagrams of the chemical reactions involved in photosynthesis
  • Green food coloring
  • Water
  • Blender
  • Pitcher
  • Ice cubes

Warm-up

  • Show students images of plants undergoing photosynthesis and ask them what they see. Encourage them to point out any examples of colors they see.
  • Ask them if they know what photosynthesis is and if they know how plants make food.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that photosynthesis is a process in which plants use energy from sunlight to make food.
  • Show students images of the stages of photosynthesis: absorption, conversion, and release. Ask them to identify each stage.
  • Explain the importance of photosynthesis to plants. Tell students that photosynthesis is how plants make the food they need to survive and grow.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups. Provide each group with a set of images of plant cells and a handouts with labeled diagrams of the stages of photosynthesis.
  • Have students work together to identify the different stages of photosynthesis in the images they are given.
  • As a class, go over the answers and discuss any questions students have.

Independent Practice

  • Provide each student with a leaf, small pot, and potting soil. Have students carefully remove the leaf from the stem and place it in their pot.
  • Encourage students to care for their leaf and monitor its growth over time.
  • Throughout the project, students should take note of any changes in the leaf and record their observations in a journal.
  • At the end of the project, have students present their findings to the class and discuss any conclusions they have drawn about photosynthesis.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson and ask students to share what they have learned about photosynthesis.
  • Remind students of the importance of photosynthesis in sustaining life on Earth and encourage them to think about how they can help protect and conserve the environment.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the concept of photosynthesis.
  • Collect and review the results of the posters or presentations created during the independent practice activity to assess students' ability to apply their understanding of photosynthesis in a real-world context.
