Topic: Vowels

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the five vowels and their corresponding sounds.

Materials

  • Flashcards with the letters A, E, I, O, and U on one side and their corresponding sounds on the other
  • A blank whiteboard or blackboard
  • Markers or chalk

Warm-up

  • Show the students the flashcards one at a time and have them say the sound out loud.
  • As a class, say the sounds together, emphasizing the appropriate vowel sound.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of vowels and their sounds using the flashcards.
  • Have the students repeat the vowel sounds after you.
  • Ask questions such as "What vowel sound does the word "cat" start with? What about "dog"? "Car"?
  • Have the students practice saying the vowel sounds out loud, either individually or as a class.

Guided Practice

  • Next, have the students work in pairs or small groups.
  • Give each group one set of flashcards and have them take turns saying the vowel sounds and identifying the words.
  • Encourage the students to help each other if they are unsure of the correct vowel sound.
  • Have the students practice reading the words out loud to themselves or to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students practice reading the words with the flashcards on their own.
  • Encourage them to read slowly and clearly, and to say the vowel sounds correctly.
  • If necessary, assist the students by pointing to the correct flashcard as they read.

Closure

  • Review the sounds that the vowels make in words.
  • Ask the students to share one thing that they learned about vowels today.
  • Encourage them to use the words they learned in their own sentences.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the "Vowel Sounds" and "Word Families" activities to see if they are able to identify the vowels and the words that they make in words.
  • Review the student's drawings during the "Creative Expression" activity to assess their understanding of the vowel sounds.
  • Ask the students to share one thing that they learned about vowels today during the independent practice activity and listen for their ability to use the words in sentences.
