Topic: The importance of reading and how to inculcate the habit of reading

Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• A number of colorful children's books
• A quiet space for reading
• Pencil and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students to share what they like to do for fun. Write their responses on the board.
• Ask students if they have any favorite books or stories that they like to read or have read to them. Write their responses on the board.
• Ask students if they know how to read.
• Ask a few volunteers to demonstrate how to read a simple sentence out loud to the class.
• Ask students if they know why it is important to be able to read.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that reading is a skill that takes time and practice to learn.
• Share some tips for understanding what we read, such as paying attention to the pictures and words, rereading if necessary, and asking for help when we don't understand something.
• Explain the importance of reading in our daily lives, including in school and for fun.
• Share some examples of the benefits of reading, such as expanding our knowledge and improving our vocabulary.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to read a short passage from a simple children's book together.
• Encourage them to use the reading strategies discussed to help them understand the story.
• After reading, have them discuss the story and answer any questions about what they read.

Independent Practice

• Assign each student a book to read independently over the next few days.
