Topic: The importance of letters

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the importance of letters in our daily lives.

Materials

  • Large alphabet flash cards
  • Examples of objects and places that start with each letter of the alphabet (e.g. apple, airport, etc.)
  • Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Show the students a large alphabet flash card and ask them to guess what letter it is.
  • Continue this with a few more letters, encouraging the students to guess before revealing the letter.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any objects or places that start with each letter of the alphabet. Write their responses on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the alphabet to the students, saying the name of each letter and showing its corresponding flash card.
  • Explain that the letters are the building blocks of words, and that words are the building blocks of sentences.
  • Read a few simple words or sentences to the students, pointing to each letter as you say it.

Guided Practice

  • Hand out the worksheets with the flash cards on them to the students.
  • Have them match the letters to the correct corresponding flash cards.
  • Encourage them to say the name of the letter as they match it.
  • If there are any mistakes, have the students find the correct letter to replace the incorrect one.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students create a classbook that contains alphabet flash cards.
  • Have them draw a picture corresponding to each letter and write the name of the letter underneath their picture.
  • As they finish their pictures, have them find the correct letter to place on the alphabet flash card next to their picture.

Closure

  • Have the students share their classbook with the rest of the class.
  • Have them use their alphabet flash cards to practice reading and writing the letters of the alphabet.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they use the classbook and their alphabet flashcards to identify and read the letters of the alphabet.
  • Collect and assess their classbook pages to assess their understanding of the letters of the alphabet and their ability to use them to write words.
