Letter Recognition

Topic: Letter recognition

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to recognize upper-case and lower-case letters of the alphabet.

Materials

  • Alphabet cards (one card for each student)
  • Letter-shaped objects (such as foam letters, rubber letters, etc.)
  • Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Review what letters are and what they look like by showing the students some examples, such as the word "cat." Ask the students to identify the letters "c," "a," and "t" in the word.
  • Review the different parts of a letter (uppercase/lowercase, stem, base, curve) using the alphabet cards.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of letter recognition by explaining that letters are the building blocks of words and words are the building blocks of sentences.
  • Review the different parts of a letter (uppercase/lowercase, stem, base, curve) using the alphabet cards.
  • Have the students practice identifying the letters in the words you provide. Start with simple words and gradually increase the difficulty as the students get better at identifying letters.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and take turns identifying the letters in the words provided. The partner can help if the student is having difficulty identifying a letter.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students create a alphabet book containing all of the letters of the alphabet. Each page should contain a word that begins with the corresponding letter. The students can illustrate the pages of their book and use the alphabet stickers to decorate their pages.

Closure

  • Have the students share their alphabet books with the class. Have the other students guess the words that begin with the corresponding letters.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity and make note of which letters they are able to identify when writing their own words. -Evaluation
  • Collect the students' alphabet books and use the words they have written to assess their understanding of letter recognition. --References
