Free 1st Grade Use Movement Activities Or Visual Cues To Demonstrate Changes In Dynamics, Tempo, And Other Musical Elements. Lesson Plan (Music)

Topic: Demonstrating Changes in Dynamics, Tempo, and Other Musical Elements

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to demonstrate changes in dynamics (loudness and softness), tempo (speed), and other musical elements through movement activities or visual cues.

Materials

  • Various musical clips, either recorded or live
  • Movement activities or visual cues (e.g. finger-waving, arm motions, etc.)

Warm-Up

  • Have students get into pairs.
  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil.
  • Have them draw a stick figure that represents their own body.
  • Show them a few examples and explain that the stick figure will be their guide for the movement activities or visual cues.
  • Have them decide on a movement activity or visual cue for each musical clip and write it on the piece of paper.
  • Show them a clip of music and have them demonstrate the movement activity or visual cue for each musical element (dynamics, tempo, and other musical elements).

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definitions of dynamics, tempo, and other musical elements.
  • Show them examples of movement activities or visual cues for each musical element.
  • Demonstrate how to use the movement activities or visual cues to demonstrate changes in dynamics, tempo, and other musical elements.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to try the movement activities or visual cues for each musical element.
  • Encourage them to think about how the movements or visual cues demonstrate the changes in dynamics, tempo, and other musical elements.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one musical element and create a movement activity or visual cue to demonstrate it.
  • Encourage them to be creative and think about how their movement or visual cue demonstrates the changes in the dynamic, tempo, or other musical element.

Closure

  • Have students share their movement activities or visual cues with the class.
  • Have a discussion about how their visuals or movements demonstrate the changes in the musical elements.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice and take note of which musical elements they are able to successfully demonstrate through their movement activities or visuals.
  • Have students demonstrate their visuals or movements for the class and ask questions to assess their understanding of the concept.
