Topic: Recognize and differentiate between high and low sounds

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to recognize and differentiate between high and low sounds.

Materials

• Pictures of objects that make high and low sounds (e.g. a whistle and a whisper)
• Large cardboard cutout of a tree
• Markers or crayons
• Construction paper
• Scissors

Warm-up

• Have students stand up and stretch their arms above their heads.
• Ask students to make a high sound, then a low sound, while gesturing to the appropriate part of the body (e.g. throat or chest).
• Review the terms "high" and "low," using the pictures as a reference.

Direct Instruction

• Show the students the pictures of the high and low sounds and ask them to identify which is which.
• Repeat the activity, this time making the high and low sounds yourself to demonstrate.
• Ask the students to repeat the high and low sounds along with you.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of high and low cards.
• Have the students take turns showing a card to their partner and having them identify which sound is high or low.
• Have the students practice making the high and low sounds themselves and have their partner identify the sound.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a piece of paper and a pen.
• Have the students draw a picture of a person making a high or low sound and write the word next to their picture.
• Have the students go around the room and present their picture to the class, having their classmates identify the sound being made.

Closure

• Review the difference between high and low sounds and how to identify them.
• Have the students share something they enjoyed about the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the students during independent practice to ensure they are correctly identifying high and low sounds.
• Have the students take a quiz where they must identify a series of high and low sounds.
