Topic: Musical Instruments and their Families

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify different types of musical instruments and the families they belong to (e.g. string instruments, percussion instruments, wind instruments).
  • Students will be able to create a collage using cut-out images of musical instruments to show their understanding of the different families.

Materials

  • Printout of Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens
  • Various cut-out images of musical instruments (e.g. violin, drum, trumpet)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Large piece of paper or poster board

Warm-up

  • Show the students a picture of a musical instrument and ask them to guess what it is and what family it belongs to.
  • Continue with a few more pictures, encouraging the students to explain their reasoning.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the orchestra and the different families of musical instruments.
  • Show the students a picture of each member of the orchestra and identify the family to which it belongs.
  • Ask the students to repeat the names of the families and their members after you.

  • Review the different types of instruments and their families.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about the orchestra, musical instruments and their families.

  • Observe the students during the independent practice and make sure they are able to identify the different types of instruments and their families.
  • Have the students fill out a questionnaire or give a short oral report about the orchestra, musical instruments and their families.
