Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify a variety of musical instruments and their sounds.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proper technique for playing a musical instrument.

Materials

  • Various musical instruments such as drums, guitar, piano, violin, etc.
  • Cassette tape recorder or digital music player
  • Printed images of various musical instruments
  • Board or whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what a musical instrument is. Allow a few students to volunteer answers.
  • Ask students to name any musical instruments they know or have heard of. Again, allow a few students to volunteer answers.
  • On the board or whiteboard, make a list of the various musical instruments mentioned by the students.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that a musical instrument is a device that is used to make sound.
  • Show the students pictures of various musical instruments and have them identify them by name.
  • Play short clips of various musical instruments to give the students a sense of what they sound like.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups to create a collage of the musical instruments they have seen and heard.
  • Have the students label the pictures and describe the sounds of each instrument.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work on a project to create a poster or a short video showcasing the different musical instruments they have learned about.
