Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify fast and slow rhythms in music and movement.
• Students will be able to create their own fast and slow rhythms through movement activities.

Materials

• Music with a variety of fast and slow rhythms
• Movement props such as scarves, sticks, or shoes (optional)

Warm-up

• Review the concept of rhythm by playing a variety of music with different rhythms. Ask the students to identify the fast or slow rhythms.
• Next, have the students stand up and stretch their bodies. Then, introduce the concept of movement and rhythm by having them move to the music using simple movements such as swaying or lifting their arms up and down.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of fast and slow rhythms by showing the students two different pieces of music with different rhythms. Ask them to identify which rhythm is faster and which is slower.
• Explain that different movements can be paired with different rhythms to create different combinations of fast and slow.

Guided Practice

• Play a song with a slow rhythm and have the students come up with different movements to go with it.
• Then play a song with a faster rhythm and have the students come up with different movements to go with it.

Independent Practice

• Have the students come up with their own ideas for fast and slow rhythms and create their own movement activities to go with them.
• Encourage the students to share their movement activities with each other and try out each other's ideas.

Closure

• Review the concept of fast and slow rhythms and the movement activities that were created.
• Ask the students to share their favorite fast and slow rhythms and explain why they liked them.

Assessment:

• Observe the students during the independent practice and make note of which rhythms they were able to create and which they struggled with.
• Have the students complete a written reflection on the fast and slow rhythms activity and what they learned about the concepts.
