Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• Drawing paper
• Pencils
• Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask students to take out a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side of the line, they will write the numbers from zero to nine, on the other side, they will draw a square for each number.
• Ask students to place the number seven on the square and ask them to describe what they see.
• Continue this with the other numbers, asking students to describe what they see and what the number represents.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of place value and explain that the digits in a number represent its value.
• Ask students to think of a one digit number, for example, three. Ask them to think of the three as the ones and the zero as the tens. Ask them to write the number and its place value on the paper.
• Repeat this with two digit numbers, asking students to think of the ones and tens place.
• Model the same with a two digit number, such as eighty-six, and ask students to repeat after you.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a set of one and two digit numbers on index cards.
• Have students work in pairs and provide each pair with an abacus.
• Have students use the abacus to visually represent the place value of the numbers.
• Have students share their work with the class.

Independent Practice

• Provide students with a set of one and two digit numbers on index cards.
• Have students use the abacus to visually represent the place value of the numbers.
• Have students write a sentence to describe each number, including the value of each digit.

Closure

• Review the importance of place value and the value of each digit in a number.
