Topic: Three Addend Addition Word Problems

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to solve three addend addition word problems.

Materials

• Three addend addition problems (e.g. 7+8+9=26, 19+20+21=62, 33+34+35=100)
• Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Review the concept of addition and have students complete a few simple addition problems for practice, such as 5+4=9, 9+6=15, and 12+10=22.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the three addend addition word problems by showing a few examples, such as 6+7+8=21 and 9+10+11=32.
• Have students work through the problems using the strategy of adding the first two numbers and then using that number as the second addend in the next problem.
• For example, to solve 6+7+8=21, students would add 6+8=14 and then use 14 as the second addend in the next problem, 21-14=7.
