Topic: Recognizing and Counting Pennies

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and count pennies.

Materials

  • A variety of coins (including pennies)
  • A counting mat or sheet of paper

Warm-up

  • Show the students the different types of coins that you have brought with you. Ask them to name each coin and tell you how many of that coin they see.
  • Then, ask the students to count how many coins they see altogether.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that today, we are going to learn how to count pennies.
  • Show the students a penny and explain that this is a penny and that it has a value of one cent.
  • Next, show the students two pennies and explain that these are two pennies and that they have a value of two cents.
  • Continue with three pennies, four pennies, and so on, until the students understand the concept of counting by tens.

Guided Practice

  • Next, give each student a pile of pennies and have them count the pennies using the counting by tens strategy.
  • Encourage the students to use the pennies to help them count the correct number.

Independent Practice

  • Finally, have the students create a pennies collage.
  • Have them glue a penny to a piece of construction paper for every ten pennies they can correctly count.
  • Have them label their collage with the correct number of pennies.

Closure

  • Review the concept of counting pennies and identifying various amounts.
  • Ask the students to share something they enjoyed about the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice to ensure they are able to count and identify pennies accurately.
  • Collect the students' pennies and review their counting and identification skills.
