Topic: Telling the time

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of the lesson, students will be able to tell the time to the nearest minute using analog clocks.

Materials

• Analog clocks (one for each student)
• Card with time-telling questions (one per student)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they can tell the time.
• Ask them to show you how they do it.
• Ask them if anyone knows how to tell the time to the nearest minute using an analog clock.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of time and explain that it is a way to measure the passing of events and activities.
• Show students an analog clock and explain the different parts: the hour hand, the minute hand, and the second hand.
• Demonstrate how to use the analog clock to tell the time to the nearest minute.
• Ask students to repeat after you and then practice telling the time to the nearest minute using the analog clock.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into pairs and give each pair an analog clock.
• Tell students to work together to tell the time to the nearest minute using the analog clock.

• Divide the class into pairs and give each pair a set of cards with pictures of different times of day on them.
• Ask students to work together to match the time on the card to the time on the analog clock.
• Have students use the clock to check their answers with you.

Closure

• Review the different times on the clock and how to tell the time.
• Ask students to share a time they liked on their card and why.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to ensure they are able to accurately tell the time and match the time on the clock.
• Ask students to show their completed clocks to the teacher and share their thoughts.
