1st Grade Identifying Numbers 1-20 Lesson Plan

Topic: Identifying numbers 1-20

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to count and identify numbers up to 20 using the Arabic numeral system.

Materials

  • Markers or crayons
  • Large sheets of paper
  • Arabic numeral chart (provided in resource section)

Warm-up

  • Review counting to 10 using Arabic numerals. Ask students to call out each number as you write it on the board.

Parent Tip: Encourage your child to use their fingers to count along with the number they are calling out. For example, if your child says "six," they should hold up their hand with all fingers straight and then curl the fingers on their hand down one at a time as they count down to zero.

  • Ask students to name the number represented by each Arabic numeral shown on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students the flashcards with the numbers 1-20. Ask them to match each flashcard to its corresponding Arabic numeral.
  • Review the names of each number. Ask students to say the name of each number as you point to it on the board.
  • Ask students to count up to 20 using Arabic numerals. Have them use their fingers to count up to the number you specify, or have them say the corresponding number word.

Guided Practice

  • Give each student a set of cards with numbers on them. Have the students sort the cards by number, placing all the ones together, all the twos together, and so on.
  • Then have them count the numbers and sort them into piles.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a number between 1 and 20. Have them draw a picture representing that number, and then write the number and a word representing the picture on a piece of paper.
  • Have the students walk around the room and exchange papers with their neighbors. Each student should look at their neighbor's picture and try to guess what number it is.
  • When everyone has guessed, have students update their papers with the correct number and move on to the next person.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to play a game using the number cards from the lesson. Give each pair a set of cards and have them take turns asking each other questions and trying to guess the right answer.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to make sure they are correctly identifying and writing numbers 1-20. Give students a brief written assessment at the end of the lesson to see if they can correctly identify and write numbers 1-20. This could be a simple quiz where students need to identify and write numbers on their own.
