Topic: First Day Feelings

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify their feelings and express them through words and/or images.
  • Students will be able to create a simple graph using Jamboard to illustrate their feelings.

Materials

  • Laptop
  • Jamboard
  • Markers or pens
  • Images of different feelings (e.g. happy, sad, excited, angry, bored)

Warm-up

  • Review the different emotions that students may feel on the first day of school (e.g. worried, excited, proud).
  • Have students practice expressing their emotions through words or actions.

Direct Instruction

  • Read the story "First Day Jitters"
  • Have students(in their groups) take out their copies of "First Day Jitters.
  • Ask students what they think the characters in the story are feeling the first day of school. (Think, Pair, Share)
  • Review the different emotions that the characters are feeling and have students identify which emotion matches which character.

Guided Practice

  • Using Jamboard, have students write the names of a character and the emotions they are feeling
  • Have students use the markers or colored pencils to draw one of the characters.
  • Have students use the scissors to cut out the characters and glue them onto the class graph paper #1 under the emotion that character is feeling.

Independent Practice

  • Using Jamboard, have students write their name and the emotions they are feeling on the first day of school
  • Have students use the markers or colored pencils to draw a picture of themselves and how they are feeling
  • Have students use the scissors to cut out their picture and glue them onto the class graph paper #2 under the emotion that they are feeling.

Closure

  • Have students share their picture with the class and explain their feelings.
  • Ask students to reflect on their experience and think about how they can handle feelings of anxiety and uncertainty in the future.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice and feedback on their ability to complete the task and visualize their feelings.
  • Collect and review the graphs as a class and use them to assess understanding of the book and ability to connect feelings to actions.
