Topic: Counting pennies and dimes

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to count and identify dimes and pennies.
• Students will be able to relate their sum to place value.

Materials

• Packs of dimes and pennies
• Chart paper and markers
• Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen or heard of dimes and pennies before. Ask them to describe what they look like and what they are used for.
• Show students a handful of dimes and pennies and have them count the number together.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the names of the coins: dime and penny.
• Explain that dimes and pennies are both worth one tenth of a dollar, but pennies are worth a little bit more than dimes.
• Demonstrate how to count dimes and pennies by grouping them by tens: 10 dimes = 1 dime-10 pennies = 1 penny.
• Explain that the value of the coins is related to their place value: dime: 1-100-penny: 1-100-1000.
• Show students how to add the values of the coins to make a sum that is greater than or equal to 10.

Guided Practice

• Show students a set of coins, such as 10 dimes and 10 pennies.
• Have students count the coins and write down their sums. Encourage them to count the value of each coin and relate it to its place value.
• Have students work with a partner to add the sums together.

Independent Practice

• Have students work on a project-based activity where they have to add sums of dimes and pennies.
• For example, they could create a currency system for an imaginary country, and have to add the values of different coins to make change.
• Encourage students to use their understanding of place value to relate the sums of the coins to their values in the currency system.

Closure

• Review the concept of counting dimes and pennies and relating sums to place value.
