Free 1st Grade Arithmetic Operations Lesson Plan (Math)

Topic: Arithmetic Operations

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to practice and master the basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Materials

  • Number cards from 1 to 10 (can be represented with objects or drawings)
  • Blank paper and pencils
  • Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

  • Show the students a number card and ask them to guess what number is represented. Then, have them find the corresponding number on their own.
  • Repeat with a few more number cards.
  • Ask the students if they can think of a way to find the numbers faster. Then, introduce the concept of counting up (for addition) and counting down (for subtraction).

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of addition by showing the students two number cards and asking them to guess what number is represented. Then, have them find the corresponding number on their own.
  • Explain that the corresponding number is called the sum.
  • Demonstrate how to find the sum by counting up the numbers.
  • Introduce the concept of subtraction by showing the students two number cards and asking them to guess what number is represented. Then, have them find the corresponding number on their own.
  • Explain that the corresponding number is called the difference.
  • Demonstrate how to find the difference by counting down the numbers.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and give each pair two number cards. Have them find the sum and difference of the numbers on the cards.
  • Have the students work in small groups and give each group several number cards. Have them find the sum and difference of the numbers on the cards.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work individually and give them several number cards. Have them find the sum and difference of the numbers on the cards.
  • Provide the students with addition and subtraction problems and have them find the answers.

Closure

  • Review the different arithmetic operations and their symbols.
  • Ask the students to give examples of each operation.
  • Ask the students to share any challenges they experienced during the lesson and how they resolved them.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the lesson and take note of their participation and understanding of the material.
  • Review the students' books to assess their understanding of the different arithmetic operations and their ability to apply them in solving problems.
  • Have the students complete a short quiz to assess their understanding of the topic.
