Topic: Alphabet

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to recognize the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds.
  • Students will be able to write the letters of the alphabet.

Materials

  • Alphabet cards (one for each student)
  • Writing paper
  • Pencils

Warm-up

  • Review the sounds of each letter of the alphabet, using the alphabet cards.
  • Have students repeat the sounds as you say them.
  • Ask students to spell their name using the alphabet cards.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the letters of the alphabet, one at a time.
  • Demonstrate how to write each letter on the whiteboard, or have students copy it from the alphabet cards.
  • Review the sounds that each letter makes, using the alphabet cards.

Guided Practice

  • Have students practice writing the letters on their own paper or on the whiteboard.
  • Ask students to call out the sound that each letter makes.
  • Have students practice writing the letters in pairs, with one helping the other with their letter formation.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a word that starts with a letter of the alphabet.
  • Have students draw a picture to represent their word and write the letter and word next to their picture.
  • Have students share their word and picture with the class.

Closure

  • Review the letters of the alphabet and their sounds.
  • Have students share any new words they learned that start with a letter of the alphabet.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent and group practice to ensure they are accurately writing their letters of the alphabet.
  • Have students take a quiz to assess their understanding of the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds.
