Topic: Understanding Auslan

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand and explain why Auslan is valuable and important.

Materials

  • Pictures or videos of people using Auslan
  • Pencils and paper for each student
  • Auslan alphabet chart or poster

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they have ever heard of Auslan or seen people using signs to communicate.
  • Ask the students if they know what the word Auslan means.
  • Ask the students if they know why we value Auslan.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the students to the concept of sign language and sign language interpreters.
  • Show the students some basic Auslan signs, such as hello, thank you, and please.
  • Explain the importance of sign language interpreters and how they help people who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate with others.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into pairs or small groups.
  • Give each group a set of flash cards with basic Auslan signs on them.
  • Have the students take turns showing the signs to their partner and saying the words associated with the signs.
  • Encourage the students to ask questions and provide feedback on their progress.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students create their own Auslan alphabet book.
  • Have the students draw and cut out pictures of basic Auslan signs and paste them onto a page.
  • Have the students write the word for each sign and include a sentence using the sign in their book.
  • Encourage the students to include additional details and information about Auslan in their book.

Closure

  • Review the importance of Auslan and the values we uphold by using it.
  • Have the students share their Auslan alphabet books with the class and explain what they included and why.
  • Encourage the students to continue practicing their Auslan skills and to share them with their family and friends.

Assessment:

  • Observe the students during independent practice to see if they are accurately and effectively communicating in Auslan.
  • Collect and review the students' Auslan alphabet books to assess their understanding and ability to communicate in written Auslan.
  • Have the students orally demonstrate their understanding of the value of Auslan by having them explain it in Auslan to the class.
