Topic: Verb to be

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and use the verb "to be" in different ways.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Handouts with examples of the verb "to be" (e.g. "I am a student." "The cat is sleeping." "It is raining.")

Warm-up

• Ask students if they can think of any words that describe or give information about someone or something. Write their answers on the whiteboard.
• Ask students if they can think of any words that describe where someone or something is. Write their answers on the whiteboard.
• Ask students if they can think of any words that describe when something happens or is occurring. Write their answers on the whiteboard.
• Review the list of words with the class and explain that all of these words describe something about someone or something. They give information about someone or something. They are all forms of the verb "to be."

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the verb "to be" and explain that it is a very important verb that gives information about someone or something.
• Discuss the different forms of the verb "to be" and give examples of each.
• Model how to use the different forms of the verb "to be" in a sentence.

Guided Practice

• Provide the students with sentence strips and have them work in pairs to create sentences using the different forms of the verb "to be".

Independent Practice

• Have the students create a visual representation of the different ways to use the verb "to be" by using the alphabet beads and yarn. They can use this to practice conjugating the verb and to review the different forms.

Closure

• Review the different ways to use the verb "to be" by having the students create another visual representation using the alphabet beads and yarn.
• Encourage the students to use the different forms of the verb "to be" in their own sentences.

Assessment
