Topic: The Hand Movements in Chinese Language

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and correctly perform the five basic hand movements in Chinese language

Materials

• Chart with the five basic hand movements in Chinese language (?????????) written on it
• Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Show the students the chart with the five basic hand movements in Chinese language and ask them to look at it carefully.
• Ask the students if they can recognize any of the hand movements from their everyday life.
• Encourage the students to practice the hand movements with the teacher.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the five basic hand movements in Chinese language to the students and explain their meanings.
• Demonstrate each hand movement and have the students imitate the movements.
• Ask the students to repeat the hand movements after you.

Guided Practice

• Provide the students with flashcards with the Chinese characters for each of the five basic hand movements.
• Have the students practice making the hand movements and simultaneously saying the Chinese characters out loud.
• Encourage the students to try hard and focus.

Independent Practice

• Have the students sit in a circle.
• Have one student choose a movement (for example, the movement to draw a -U- shape) and demonstrate it.
• Have the students try to copy the movement and say the corresponding Chinese character out loud.
• If a student makes a mistake, have the student who demonstrated the movement point to the correct movement and say the correct Chinese character.

Closure

• Ask the students to share one thing they learned about Chinese characters during the lesson.
• Encourage the students to practice writing the Chinese characters they learned today.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice to ensure they are writing the characters correctly.
• Collect the students' written work and review it to assess their understanding of the characters.
• Use a checklist to evaluate their writing and mark the students' work accordingly.
