Sounds Lesson Plan for 1st Grade Students

Topic: Teaching letter sounds

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the sounds made by letters of the alphabet.

Materials

  • Alphabet cards with the letters A through Z
  • Alphabet cards with the letters A through Z written in capital and lowercase form
  • Pen and paper for each student
  • Alphabet cards with the letters A through Z

Warm-up

  • Review the alphabet with the students. Have them say the name of each letter as they point to it.
  • Ask the students to name the sounds that each letter makes. For example, for the letter "A," have them say the sound "ah."

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the new letter to the students. Show them the letter card and have them say the name of the letter.
  • Play the sound association game with the new letter. Have the students close their eyes and randomly select a sound clip (e.g. "ah," "eh," "oo," "ee"). Play the sound clip and ask the students to identify which letter makes that sound. If they get it right, give them a sticker or a point on a score card. Otherwise, repeat the sound clip until they get it right.
  • Repeat this process with all the letters in the alphabet.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs or small groups. Give each group a set of sound clips and have them identify which letters make which sounds.
  • Use a whiteboard or chart paper to list the letters and their sounds. Have the students check their work and add any missing letters or sounds.
  • Ask the students to re-teach their sounds to the rest of the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work individually or in pairs to create a sound book. A sound book is a book that contains pictures of objects that start with a specific letter sound. To create their sound book, the students should cut out pictures of objects that begin with the letter sounds they have learned and glue them to a page in their book. Then they should write the letter sound and the name of the object next to each picture.
  • Encourage the students to be creative and think of different objects that start with each letter sound.

Closure

  • Have the students share their sound books with the class. Ask the students to say the name of the object and the letter sound it starts with.
  • Review the letter sounds and their names one last time.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice to see if they can accurately write the words that start with the correct letter sound.
  • Collect the students' sound books and assess their ability to write words that start with the correct letter sound.
