Topic: Describing School Materials

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and use descriptive words and phrases to describe school materials.

Materials

  • A variety of school materials such as a pencil, textbook, sheet of paper, etc.

Warm-up

  • Show the students the different school materials and ask them to describe each one using descriptive words and phrases. Example: "this is a pencil. It is long and thin and made of wood. It has a rubber at the end for writing."
  • Encourage the students to use descriptive words and phrases such as big, small, rough, smooth, shiny, etc.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of descriptive words and phrases and explain how they help us to describe things more clearly.
  • Use the chart paper and markers to practice describing the school materials using descriptive words and phrases.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of school materials to work with.
  • Have the students use the descriptive words and phrases to describe the school materials to their group mates.
  • Encourage the students to help each other come up with descriptive words and phrases if they are unsure of any.

Independent Practice

Closure

  • Have the students share their collages with the class and explain which descriptive words and phrases they used and why.

  • Observe the students during the naming activity and during the independent practice activity to ensure that they are accurately and effectively using descriptive words and phrases.
  • Collect the students' collages and review them to assess their ability to effectively use descriptive words and phrases to describe their chosen object or place.
