Materials

  • Sentence strips with proper nouns and common nouns

Warm-up

  • Review the concept of nouns and ask students to give examples of different types of nouns they know, such as people, places, and things.
  • Show the students a sentence strip with a proper noun and a common noun on it and have them guess which is which.
  • Continue this with a few more sentence strips until all students understand the difference between proper nouns and common nouns.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of proper nouns and explain that these are nouns that refer to specific people, places, or things.
  • Show the students more sentence strips with proper nouns and common nouns and ask them to identify which is which.
  • As a class, discuss the importance of proper nouns and how they help us to identify and refer to specific people, places, or things.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of sentence strips with proper nouns and common nouns.
  • Have the students take turns using the scissors to cut out the proper nouns, and then have them glue the proper nouns onto the matching sentence strips.
  • After the students have finished, have a class discussion about the proper nouns they have added and how they help to identify and refer to specific people, places, or things.
