Topic: Phonemic Awareness of Consonant Digraphs (c+h)

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and correctly pronounce the phoneme consonant+h blend (ch, th, ph, sh).
• Students will be able to use the phoneme consonant+h blend in spoken words.

Materials

• Flashcards with pictures of objects that start with the phoneme consonant+h blend (ch, th, ph, sh)
• Pen and paper for each student

Warm-Up

• Review the phonemes and corresponding sounds of each letter (ph = f, sh = h, ch = k, th = th)
• Have students practice saying the phonemes and their corresponding sounds in a spontaneous speech

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of phoneme blends by showing and saying examples of each blend (ch, th, ph, sh)
• Model how to break the blends apart and say the individual phonemes
• Have students practice saying the individual phonemes and blending them together to say the blends
• Practice saying the blends and their corresponding words in a spontaneous speech

Guided Practice

• Show students the set of flash cards with the consonant+h blends and their corresponding words
• Have students work in pairs or small groups
• Have students take turns showing a flash card and saying the word
• Have students help their partners or fellow group members learn the word by saying it and showing the flash card

Independent Practice

• Divide students into small groups
• Have each group choose one consonant+h blend to focus on
• Have each group come up with a creative way to practice the consonant+h blend they have chosen
• Have each group present their activity to the rest of the class
