Topic: The Letter A and Its Sound

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to write the letter a and identify its sound.

Materials

• Flashcards with the letters a through d
• Writing paper and pencils/pens

Warm-up

• Review the letters of the alphabet with the students. Have them point to each letter as you say it out loud.
• Ask the students if they can name any animals that start with the letter a. Write their answers on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the sound a makes in words. Say the word "a" out loud and have the students repeat it after you.
• Have the students repeat the sound a makes in words after you. Say a word with the sound a makes, and have the students repeat the word and the sound after you.
• Write the words with the sound a makes on the board. As you write the words, have the students repeat the sound a makes after you.
