Free 1st Grade Demonstrative Pronouns Lesson Plan (English)

Topic: Demonstrative Pronouns

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and use demonstrative pronouns to refer to objects and people in the nearby, middle, and far distances.

Materials

  • Pictures of objects and people in different distances (e.g. a friend standing close to the class, a tree in the park across the street, the moon in the sky)
  • Pronoun cards with the words "this," "that," and "these" written on them
  • Flashcards with different objects and people on them

Warm-up

  • Have students sit in a circle.
  • Give each student a piece of paper with a different noun written on it (e.g. dog, tree, cat).
  • Give each student a pin and ask them to stick the pin in the paper when they hear a noun that is close to them (e.g. dog), then another pin when they hear a noun that is farther away (e.g. tree).
  • Finish by having students stick a pin in the paper when they hear a noun that is very far away (e.g. cat).
  • Ask students what they noticed about the distances they were assigned to pin the nouns.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definitions of "this," "that," and "that over there" demonstrative pronouns.
  • Have students take out their cards with the different nouns written on them.
  • Have a student come to the front of the class and hold up one of the cards.
  • Have the student say the noun out loud and then use the corresponding demonstrative pronoun (e.g. "this dog," "that cat").
  • Have the student repeat this process with the other cards.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into pairs and have each pair take a set of cards.
  • Have the students take turns holding up a card and saying the corresponding noun and demonstrative pronoun.
  • Encourage the students to help each other if they are unsure of the correct pronoun to use.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work in groups to create a simple skit or role play that demonstrates the difference between "this" and "that".
  • Encourage the students to use the pronouns in their skit or role play and to remember to use the correct pronoun for the nouns that they use.

Closure

  • Have the students share their skits or role plays with the class.
  • Review the main points of the lesson: the difference between "this" and "that", and when to use each pronoun.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of the concept.
  • Collect the students' written work and review it to assess their ability to correctly use "this" and "that" in a sentence.
