Topic: The Ocean

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the short-vowel sounds in the words "caviar" and "cucumber."
  • Students will be able to identify and name the characteristics of a cucumber and caviar.

Materials

  • Pictures of a cucumber and caviar
  • Writing materials (pencils and paper)
  • Short-vowel sound cards (a, e, i, o, and u)

Warm-up

  • Review the short-vowel sounds by saying the names of the cards one at a time and having the students say the sound of each card. (Example: "Say the a sound in apple. AaaaaapPLE!")
  • Have the students practice saying the short-vowel sounds in a word, such as "apple."

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of the ocean and show the students pictures or videos of the ocean.
  • Tell the students that the word "ocean" has the short-vowel sound [o] (as in "oh oh oh").
  • Have the students repeat the short-vowel sound [o] (as in "oh oh oh") several times.
  • Say the word "ocean" a few more times, and have the students repeat the short-vowel sound [o] (as in "oh oh oh") each time.
  • Then, say the word "octopus" and have the students repeat the short-vowel sound [o] (as in "oh oh oh").
  • Go through all the short-vowel sounds with the students, saying the words and having the students repeat the sounds.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Give each group a set of small cards with ocean-related words on them (e.g. fish, seaweed, coral, etc.).
  • Have the students work together to identify the short-vowel sound in each word and then chant the word together.
  • Have the students practice this with each group member taking a turn to identify the short-vowel sound in each word and then chant the word together.
  • Go through all the short-vowel sounds with the students, having them practice with the small cards.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work individually or in small groups to create a book about the ocean.
  • Encourage them to include pictures and words to represent different ocean animals and objects.
  • Have the students present their books to the class.

Closure

  • Review the different sounds that the letters C, V, and C make in words.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about the ocean during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice to see if they are able to write at least one correct word with a CVC-short vowel sound.
  • Collect and review the students' class book pages to assess their understanding of the different sounds the letters C, V, and C make in words.
