Topic: Birthday invitation

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to create a birthday invitation using the provided template.

Materials

  • Birthday invitation template (provided below)
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Writing paper
  • Colored pencils or markers (optional)

Warm-up

  • Show the students the birthday invitation template and ask them to look at the different areas of the invitation and name them.
  • Write the names of the areas on the board: "the top line," "the middle section," and "the bottom line."
  • Ask the students to think of a friend they would like to invite to a birthday party and write their name on the board under the "the top line" area.
  • Ask the students to think of the place where the party will take place and write that under the "the middle section" area.
  • Ask the students to think of the time and date of the party and write that under the "the bottom line" area.
  • Ask the students to think of any additional information they might want to include on the invitation, such as the party theme or any special activities that will be taking place, and write that under the "additional information" area.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the names of the different areas of the birthday invitation template with the students.
  • Explain that a birthday invitation should include the name of the birthday boy or girl, the place where the party will take place, the time and date of the party, and any additional information such as the theme or activities.
  • Show the students the different examples of birthday invitations and have them identify the names, places, times, and additional information on each one.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs to create their own birthday invitation using the template and writing utensils provided.
  • Walk around the room and assist the students as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students decorate their invitations and mail them to their friends.
  • Encourage the students to invite their friends to their birthday party and to have fun at the party.

Closure

  • Have the students share their invitations and discuss who they invited and whether their friends are planning to attend the party.
  • Review the steps for holding a birthday party and ask the students to share any additional ideas they have.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice and look for them to incorporate the necessary elements of a birthday invitation into their own invitations.
  • Ask the students to share their invitations with you and evaluate their use of language and overall understanding of the steps for holding a birthday party.
