Topic: The English Alphabet

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and pronounce each letter of the alphabet.
• Students will be able to compose simple words using the letters of the alphabet.

Materials

• Alphabet cards (one for each student)
• Blank paper and pencils

Warm-up

• Ask students to say their name and spell it out loud, one letter at a time.
• Encourage them to use the correct pronunciation for each letter.
• If a student makes a mistake, provide feedback and encouragement.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of phonics, and explain that it is the way we use the letters in words to sound out their sounds.
• Use the picture cards to demonstrate how to sound out words using phonics.
• Ask students to repeat the sounds after you, and encourage them to participate and follow along.

Guided Practice

• Divide the words into small groups and give each group a set of picture cards.
• Have students work together to sound out the words and identify the sounds.
• Encourage them to ask for help if they are unsure of a word.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a word they worked on during the guided practice.
• Have them write the word on a piece of paper and draw a picture to go with it.
• Have them present their word cards to the class and explain the sounds and the meaning of the word.

Closure

• Review the sounds and words learned during the lesson.
• Have students share something they enjoyed about the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice and give feedback.
• Collect the finished books and assess students' understanding of the sounds and words.
