Topic: The Elements of Art

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define the elements of art as line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space.
• Students will be able to identify and use the elements of art in creating artworks.

Materials

• Drawing paper
• Pencils of different colors
• Eraser
• Whiteboard and markers
• Images of artistic works that show the elements of art

Warm-Up

• Begin the lesson by showing a variety of artworks and asking the students to describe what they see. What stands out to them?
• As they describe the art, have the students use the elements of art to describe what they see. For example, if a student mentions a red square, ask them to clarify that it is a red square and not a red circle.
• After a few examples, ask the students to share any observations they have made about the elements of art in the artworks.

Direct Instruction

• Review the definitions of the elements of art with the students using the handouts.
• Discuss how the elements of art can be used in creating artworks. For example, a painting may use color, line, and shape to create a certain mood or feeling. A sculpture may use shape, form, and space to create a three-dimensional artwork.
• Use the artworks as examples to demonstrate how the elements of art can be used in art creation.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs or small groups to create their own artworks using the elements of art.
• Provide guidance and assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have the students create their own artworks using the elements of art.
• Encourage them to think about how they are using each element in their artwork and why it is important to their overall composition.

Closure

• Have the students share their artworks with the class and explain how they used the elements of art in their compositions.
• Review the elements of art and how they are used in creating artworks.
