Free Line Is An Element Of Art Lesson Plan for 1st Grade Students

Topic: The element of art called line

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and describe different kinds of lines.
• Students will be able to demonstrate how line is used by artists in their artwork.

Materials

• Pencils of different shapes and sizes (sharpened)
• Paper
• Art supplies such as markers or crayons

Warm-up

• Show the students a few different pencils and ask them to describe the differences they see between them.
• Encourage them to describe the size, shape, and texture of the pencils.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of line as one of the elements of art.
• Explain that lines can be thin or thick, straight or curved, and they can be used to create different effects in art.
• Show the students some examples of different types of lines and have them describe what they see.
• Distribute the handouts with examples of different types of lines and have the students study them.
• Ask the students to think about how the different types of lines are used by artists in their work.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in small groups to examine the examples of lines and brainstorm other examples of lines they can think of.
• Have the students share their ideas with the class and write them on the board.
• As a class, create a list of different types of lines and their uses in art.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose one type of line from the list created during guided practice and create a project using that line.
• Projects could be drawing a picture using only lines of the chosen type, creating a collage using cutouts made only using lines of the chosen type, etc.
• As the students work, monitor their progress and provide assistance as needed.

Closure

• Have the students share their projects with the class.
• Discuss the different ways that the students used lines in their projects and the different effects that using different types of lines can have.

Assessment: Observe the students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of the concept of line as an element of art. Evaluate the students' projects for their use of lines and the different effects that the lines have on the overall design or shape of the project.
