Topic: Contrasting colors

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to name at least 3 colors and describe how they are different from one another (e.g. one is bright and one is dark).
  • Students will be able to create a picture using at least 3 different colors and show how they are contrasting.

Materials

  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Construction paper
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • White paper

Warm-up

  • Show the students a white piece of paper and ask them to think of at least 3 colors they would like to use to create a picture.
  • After a few minutes, have the students share their ideas with a partner.
  • Ask the students if they can think of a way to make the colors stand out from one another (e.g. one is bright and one is dark).

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that the colors they chose can be used to create a picture, but that we also need to make sure that the colors contrast with each other.
  • Show the students some examples of how to use contrasting colors and how to make sure they stand out from one another.
  • Use the white paper and colored pencils to demonstrate the idea of contrasting colors.

Guided Practice

  • Show the students another example of how to use contrasting colors and how to make sure they stand out from one another.
  • Have the students work with a partner to create their own contrasting color picture, using the colors they chose and following the directions provided.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students use the supplies provided to create their own contrasting color picture, using the colors they chose and following the directions provided.
  • Encourage the students to talk to their partners and help each other if they are having any difficulties.

Closure

  • Have the students share their completed contrasting color pictures with the class.
  • Ask the students to identify the colors they used and how they used them to create contrasting colors in their picture.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity to assess their ability to use contrasting colors in their pictures.
  • Collect and review their completed contrasting color pictures to assess their understanding of contrasting colors.
  • Observe the students during the closing discussion to assess their ability to identify and use contrasting colors in their pictures.
