Process Paragraph Lesson Plan for 12th Grade Students

Topic: Developing a process paragraph that includes complex sentences and phrasal verbs

Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the structure of a process paragraph and how to use it to describe a process or procedure
• Identify and correctly use complex sentences and phrasal verbs in a process paragraph

Materials

• Text that describes a process or procedure (e.g. recipe, steps for solving a math problem)
• Colored markers or highlighters
• Blank paper or tablet for note-taking

Warm-up

• Ask students to think of a process or procedure that they regularly engage in (e.g. how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to play basketball).
• Have students share their processes with a partner and discuss the following: -What are the different steps or actions involved in the process?
• How are the steps organized?
• Can you give an example of a process that you already know?
• As a class, create a list of processes on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a process paragraph, explaining that it is a type of paragraph that describes a process or procedure in detail.
• Discuss the importance of including all the steps in a process paragraph, as this helps the reader understand and follow the procedure.
• Explain the structure of a process paragraph, which typically includes a topic sentence that introduces the process, and multiple body sentences that each describe one step in the process.
• Introduce phrasal verbs, explaining that these are verbs that are usually paired with prepositions or adverbs to create complex sentences.
• Provide examples of phrasal verbs and how they can be used in a process paragraph (e.g. to illustrate how to do something, to describe how something is done).

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify and list the steps in a process they know well (e.g. how to bake a cake).
• Have pairs share their process with the class, and discuss any missing or incorrect steps.
• Have students use their process as the basis for a process paragraph, adding complex sentences and phrasal verbs where appropriate.
