Tarot For Positive Change Lesson Plan for 12th Grade Students

Topic: tarot for positive change

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the basic concepts and symbolism of tarot and how it can be used as a tool for personal growth and transformation.

Materials

  • Basic tarot deck
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes

Warm-up

  • Ask students to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths, bringing their attention to their breath and slowing their breathing.
  • Ask students to imagine a place where they feel safe and secure, a place where they can relax and feel at ease.
  • Ask students to visualise this place in as much detail as possible, focusing on the sights, sounds and smells of this place.
  • Once students are deeply immersed in their visualisation, ask them to reach out and take a handhold on the reality of their visualization. Ask them to take a few more deep breaths and fully immerse themselves in their visualization, seeing, hearing and smelling everything around them.
  • Once students are fully immersed in their visualization, ask them to notice any subtle changes in their environment. Perhaps a breeze has picked up, or the sun has shifted slightly in the sky.
  • Ask students to look around and take in their surroundings, noticing any changes since they last visited their safe place.
  • Finally, ask students to reach out and take a handhold on the reality of their current environment, and slowly open their eyes, returning their focus to the classroom.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of tarot as a tool for positive change and personal growth.
  • Explain that tarot is a system of divination, which means it can be used to gain insight into the past, present and future.
  • Explain that the tarot is made up of a deck of cards, each card representing a different aspect of the human experience.
  • Explain that a tarot reading can be done using a variety of techniques, including intuitive reading, where the reader draws cards based on their intuition, and literal reading, where the reader draws cards based on a specific question.
  • Explain that a tarot reading can be used for a variety of purposes, including personal growth, self-discovery, relationship counselling, and divining the future.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to perform a simple tarot reading for one another using a technique of the teacher's choosing.
  • As students are working, circulate and provide support and guidance as needed.
  • After students have completed their readings, facilitate a class discussion on the experience, including what insights were gained and what opportunities for growth and self-discovery were revealed.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based independent practice involving the use of tarot to facilitate positive change in their own lives. The project could be as simple as creating a tarot spread to use on a regular basis, or as complex as designing and executing a full-scale tarot-based initiation ceremony.
  • Encourage students to be creative and think outside the box as they develop their projects.

Closure

  • Have students present their independent practice projects to the class.
  • As a class, discuss the different ways that tarot can be used to facilitate positive change in one's life and the different ways that tarot can be used as a personal meditation and spiritual tool.

Assessment

  • Observation of students during class discussion and during independent practice project presentation.
  • Evaluation of students' written or visual representations of their independent practice project.
