Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

Warm-Up

  • Have students take out a piece of paper and write down three things they wish to accomplish today.
  • Ask students to share their goals with the class.
  • Discuss how setting and achieving goals can help us achieve our dreams and live happier, more successful lives.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of independent living and discuss the skills and habits that are necessary to live on our own.
  • Discuss the importance of planning and organizing, including making a budget, setting priorities, and creating a schedule.
  • Explain the importance of self-care, including maintaining good health, managing stress, and making time for recreation and relaxation.
  • Introduce the concept of collaboration and discuss ways to seek help and support from family, friends, and professionals.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to brainstorm ideas for how they can be more independent in their daily lives.
  • Have each group share their ideas with the class and discuss how each idea can be implemented.
  • Encourage students to come up with specific action steps they can take to implement their ideas.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one idea from the group brainstorming session to implement in their daily lives.
  • Have students create a plan for how they will implement their chosen idea, including specific action steps they will take and a schedule for when they will take those action steps.
  • Have students implement their plan and track their progress.

Closure

  • Have students share their plans for implementing their chosen idea and their successes and challenges with implementing their plans.
  • Discuss the importance of self-care and the skills and strategies that were learned in the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and give feedback on their implementation of self-care skills.
  • Have students reflect on their own experience with the lesson and their ability to implement self-care skills.
  • Have students complete a short quiz or written reflection on the importance of self-care and the skills they learned in the lesson.
