Topic: Subjunctive in Spanish with special expressions and sentences

Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the uses of the subjunctive in Spanish with special expressions and sentences.

Materials

• Balloon animals
• Spanish sentences on cards with subjunctive verbs
• Spanish sentences with subjunctive verbs written on the board

Warm-up

• Ask the students to think of a time when they had to make a big decision, such as which university to attend, what to do after graduation, or how to spend a holiday.
• Have them share their experiences with the class and ask them to explain why they made the decision they did.
• Ask the students if they ever felt uncertain about their decision and if they had to, how they would make sure they were making the right choice.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the subjunctive and explain that it is a verb form that is used to express uncertainty, doubt, or a desire or a wish.
• Provide examples of the subjunctive being used in different verb tenses and with different verbs and expressions.
• Explain the different uses of the subjunctive, including in subordinate clauses, in conditional sentences, and in phrases such as "deber + infinitive."

Guided Practice

• Provide students with examples of sentences that contain the subjunctive and ask them to identify the subjunctive in each sentence.
• Have students work in pairs or small groups to identify and correct any incorrect subjunctive usage in a set of provided sentences.
• Go over the corrected sentences as a class and discuss any questions or challenges that students had.

Independent Practice

• Have students work independently or in small groups to create a presentation on a specific use of the subjunctive in Spanish.
