Topic: The Social Impact of Technology on Society

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the social impact of technology on society, and its implications for the future.

Materials

• Examples of technology (e.g. smartphones, drones, self-driving cars)
• Handouts with short descriptions and images of different types of technology
• Magnetic tiles or other manipulative materials for group activities

Warm-up

• Ask students to brainstorm a list of technologies they are familiar with and familiarize themselves with the provided examples.
• Discuss the different types of technologies and their uses in society.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of social impact and explain that it refers to the way that technologies affect society.
• distribute the handouts with the examples of social impact and go through them as a class, discussing the different types of social impact and their consequences.
• Emphasize the importance of considering the social impact of new technologies before they are implemented.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group one of the examples of social impact to discuss.
• Have the groups brainstorm ideas about the social impact of the technology they have been given and discuss their ideas with the class.
• Emphasize the importance of considering the social impact of new technologies before they are implemented.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a technology that is currently being developed or has recently been introduced, and research the social impact of that technology.
• Have students create a presentation or written report describing the social impact of the technology they have chosen, and the ways in which it could be positive or negative.
• Have students present their findings to the class or submit their written report.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson with the students.
• Discuss the importance of considering the social impact of new technologies and the role that engineers and designers play in ensuring that new technologies have a positive social impact.
• Ask students to share any thoughts or concerns they have about the social impact of new technologies.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the group presentation and independent project work to assess their understanding of the concept of social impact and their ability to analyze the social impact of a new technology.
• Evaluate the students' written reflection on the social impact of a new technology on society as a measure of their understanding of the concept and their ability to apply it in a real-world setting.
