Topic: The importance of maps

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the definition of a map and its divisions and its importance in our daily lives.

Materials

• Maps of different types (political, topographic, soil)
• Handouts with definitions and examples of map divisions
• Writing materials

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have ever used a map before.
• Ask the students to name the different divisions on a map.
• Write the divisions on the board (title, legend, compass rose, scale, north arrow, meridian, latitude scale, longitude scale).

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a map as a visual representation of a physical location.
• Explain the purpose of each division on a map (title, legend, compass rose, scale, north arrow, meridian, latitude scale, longitude scale).
• Demonstrate how to use a map and its divisions (e.g. finding a location, determining scale, using the latitude and longitude scales).

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to practice using a map and its divisions. Have one student act as the map and the other as the student using the map. The student using the map should have a list of locations, and should have to locate each one using the map and its divisions.
• Have students work in small groups to create their own small maps, using the provided paper, markers, and scissors. Have them divide the map into its divisions and use it to locate various locations on the map.

Independent Practice

• Have students work in small groups to create their own large scale map, using the provided paper, markers, and scissors. Have them divide the map into its divisions and use it to locate various locations on the map.

Closure

• Have students share their maps with the class and discuss the importance of maps in our everyday lives.

Assessment

• Observe students during the map activity and feedback on their participation and understanding of the concepts.
• Collect and grade the maps for accuracy and understanding of the given instructions.
