Topic:Functional Areas of Management

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to illustrate and identity functional areas of management.

Materials

  • Handout with definitions of functional areas of management (HR, Finance, Marketing, Operations, etc.)
  • Images of examples of functional areas in action (e.g. HR recruiting, Finance analytics, Marketing campaigns, etc.)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of jobs they know that are related to management. Write their answers on the board.
  • Ask students to share a little about what they know about the job titles on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of management and explain that it is the process of overseeing and directing people and resources to achieve organizational goals.
  • Explain that management involves making decisions, setting goals, and providing direction and leadership to achieve those goals.
  • Introduce the concept of functional areas of management and explain that these are the various areas of management, such as:
  • Human resources: Responsible for the recruitment, selection, and development of employees.
  • Finance: Responsible for managing financial resources and overseeing financial transactions.
  • Marketing: Responsible for developing and promoting products and services to meet the needs of customers.
  • Operations: Responsible for ensuring that products and services are produced and delivered in a cost-effective and efficient way.
  • Introduce the concept of strategic management and explain that this is the process of making strategic decisions that will help an organization achieve its long-term goals.
  • Discuss the importance of leadership in management and explain that leaders play a key role in guiding and motivating employees to achieve organizational goals.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a handout with information about a specific functional area of management (e.g. human resources, finance, marketing, operations).
  • Have each group discuss the key responsibilities of the functional area they were given and identify examples of strategic decisions that could be made within that area.
  • Have each group share their findings with the class.
  • As a class, create a simple chart listing the key responsibilities of each functional area of management and any examples of strategic decisions that could be made within each area.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one functional area of management that they are interested in learning more about (e.g. human resources, finance, marketing, operations).
  • Have them research the key responsibilities of that functional area and create a short presentation/report explaining how they could use their knowledge of the functional area to make strategic decisions.
  • Have students present their findings to the class.

Closure

  • Review the key responsibilities of each functional area of management and discuss how effective decisions made using that functional area can have a positive impact on a company and its stakeholders.
  • Ask students to reflect on the importance of each functional area of management and how it can contribute to the overall success of a company.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the group work activity and feedback on their ability to work together, identify the key functions of each area of management and effectively apply the concepts to a real-world scenario.
  • Evaluate the presentations and reports created by students as independent practice and assess their understanding of the material covered in the lesson.
