Free Lymphocytes Lesson Plan for 12th Grade Students

Topic: lymphocytes, cells types, their ratio and their functions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and describe the different types of lymphocytes and their ratios in the blood.
  • Students will be able to explain the functions of lymphocytes in the immune system.

Materials

  • Diagrams of lymphocytes
  • Table showing the different types of lymphocytes and their ratios in the blood
  • Handouts explaining the functions of lymphocytes in the immune system

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what lymphocytes are and what their functions are in the body. Let a few students answer and discuss their answers.

Direct Instruction

  • Show a diagram of a lymph node and explain that it is a collection of lymphocytes that are located in the body to filter and fight against infections and foreign substances.
  • Explain that there are two main types of lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes.
  • B lymphocytes produce antibodies, which are proteins that fight against foreign substances in the body.
  • T lymphocytes are responsible for the cell-mediated immunity, which is the ability of the body to fight against foreign substances on a cellular level.
  • Discuss the ratio of B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes in the body, and explain that there is a higher ratio of B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and a higher ratio of T lymphocytes in the lymph nodes and other lymphoid tissue.

Guided Practice

  • Provide the students with a model of a lymphocyte and have them identify which type it is, B lymphocyte or T lymphocyte.
  • Have the students work in pairs and have them identify the ratio of B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes in a diagram of a lymph node. Have them record their findings on the worksheet.
  • Have the students use their knowledge of the function of B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes to explain why there is a higher ratio of B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and a higher ratio of T lymphocytes in the lymph nodes and other lymphoid tissue.
  • Have the students present their findings to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Provide the students with a diagram of a lymph node and have them identify the different types of lymphocytes present in the node.
  • Have the students complete a chart showing the function of B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes.
  • Have the students use their knowledge of the function of B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes to explain a childhood disease caused by a deficiency in B lymphocytes.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson and have the students share something they found interesting or surprising about lymphocytes.
  • Ask the students to explain how lymphocytes help the body fight infections.
  • Ask the students to explain how lymphocytes help the body fight some types of cancer.
  • Thank the students for their participation and effort.

Assessment

  • To assess the students' understanding of the material, have them complete a quiz or test on the class material. Alternatively, have them complete a written assignment on the class material, or have them present a project or poster on a specific type of lymphocyte or its function.
