12th Grade Introduction To Pharmacology Lesson Plan Example

Topic: INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACOLOGY

Objectives & Outcomes

  • To provide an overview of the field of pharmacology, including the properties and actions of different types of drugs and their therapeutic applications.

Materials

  • List of common drugs and their classifications (e.g. analgesics, antacids, anti-infectives, antidepressants, antipsychotics, etc.)
  • Handouts or slides with illustrations of drug properties and actions
  • Reference materials on the properties and actions of different types of drugs (e.g. drug handouts, drug review articles, drug monographs, etc.)
  • Interactive materials (e.g. manipulatives, models, props, etc.) for demonstrating drug properties and actions

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about the medications they take on a regular basis and what purposes they serve (e.g. to relieve symptoms, to treat a disease, etc.).
  • Then, ask students to share their thoughts with a small group of their peers.
  • After a few minutes, have students return to their seats and share with the class what they discussed with their small group.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that pharmacology is the study of drugs and their effects on the body.
  • Introduce the different categories of medications (e.g. analgesics, antibiotics, antacids, etc.) and explain the purposes of each.
  • Demonstrate the proper way to take medications, including how to properly follow instructions, use proper dosage, and avoid potential side effects.

Guided Practice

  • Provide students with a handout containing common medications and their uses.
  • Have students work in pairs to identify the purpose of each medication and explain how it works.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to create a presentation or poster on a specific type of medication (e.g. painkillers, antibiotics).
  • Students should research the types of medications within their chosen category, their mechanisms of action, and their potential side effects.
  • Students should present or display their findings to the class.

Closure

  • Review the main points covered in the lesson, including the different types of medications and their mechanisms of action.
  • Ask students to share their thoughts on the importance of understanding pharmacology and their experiences with using medications.

Assessment

  • Administer a quiz or test covering the material covered in the lesson, including the different types of medications, their mechanisms of action, and their uses.
  • Evaluate students' projects on their ability to research and discuss a specific medication, their use of visual and written supports, and their ability to present their findings to the class.
