Free 12th Grade Hydrides Lesson Plan

Topic: Hydrides

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to describe the bonding characteristics and structural features of hydrides.

Materials

  • Hydrides samples (e.g. NaH, LiAlH4)
  • Various bond models (e.g. VSEPR, Lewis)
  • Handouts with hydride properties and reactions
  • Balance scales or balance beam scales

Warm-up

  • Have students complete a bond quiz on various chemical bonds (e.g. covalent, ionic, metallic).
  • Following the quiz, briefly discuss the different types of bonds and their characteristics.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of hydrides, explaining that they are compounds containing a hydrogen atom bonded to a heavier element.
  • Discuss the general characteristics of hydrides, including their high melting points and low boiling points, as well as their high solubility in nonpolar liquids and low solubility in polar solvents.
  • Provide examples of hydrides, including lithium hydride (LiH), sodium hydride (NaH), and potassium hydride (KH).

Guided Practice

  • Provide students with a list of compounds and have them identify whether each compound is a hydride.
  • As a class, go through the list and discuss the reasons for each compound's classification as a hydride.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to identify additional compounds that are hydrides.
  • Encourage students to use their knowledge of bonding and molecular structure to support their identifications.

Closure

  • Review the properties and examples of hydrides.
  • Ask students to share any additional compounds they identified as hydrides during independent practice.

Assessment

  • Review the answers to the practice problems and assess students' understanding of hydrides.
  • Ask students to give a short presentation on one of the hydrides they identified during independent practice, explaining its properties and uses.
