Free Making Research Recommendations Lesson Plan for 12th Grade Students

Topic: Making Research Recommendations

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this unit, students will be able to identify information needs related to a specific topic, search and evaluate peer-reviewed resources to make research recommendations.

Materials

  • Access to a computer with internet access
  • A list of peer-reviewed research databases (such as PubMed, Academic Search Premier, and PsychInfo)
  • An example research paper that makes research recommendations

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of topics that they would like to learn more about.
  • Write their ideas on the board.
  • Ask students to think about what types of information they would need to learn more about these topics, and write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students to share their thoughts with a partner or in small groups, and record their responses on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of making research recommendations.
  • Explain that when we are making research recommendations, we need to consider the type of information that is needed and the best way to find it.
  • Show students the brainstormed list of topics and the list of information needed to learn more about them.
  • Have students work in small groups to consider the type of information needed and the best way to find it for each topic.
  • As a class, discuss the groups' recommendations and come to a consensus on recommendations for each topic.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to search for and gather information on their assigned topic(s).
  • As a class, have students share their findings and explain how they determined the information they found to be the most relevant and useful.
  • Have students use the information they gathered to create a detailed, well-written research recommendation, which they can present to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in small groups to conduct additional research on their assigned topic(s) and create a detailed, well-written research recommendation.
  • Encourage students to be creative and think critically about the information they find, how it may be used, and how it might be combined with other sources to form a more complete picture.

Closure

  • Have each group present their research recommendation to the class and discuss their findings and conclusions.
  • Review the importance of making research recommendations and the various ways in which they can be used.
  • Ask students to reflect on the process of conducting their own research and writing a research recommendation, and discuss any challenges or successes they experienced.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to conduct research and write a research recommendation, taking into account the criteria outlined in the lesson plan.
  • Collect and grade the research recommendations submitted by students, using the criteria outlined in the lesson plan as a guide.
