Objectives & Outcomes

  • After completing this lesson, students will be able to understand the importance of interpreting research data and be able to interpret basic research data using appropriate statistical techniques.

Materials

  • Handouts with examples of research data
  • Explain Stats software (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to list the different types of research they are familiar with.
  • Encourage them to share their ideas and explain their answers.
  • Write their answers on the board.
  • As a class, discuss the importance of research in the field of psychology and the different types of research that are conducted.

Direct Instruction

  • Provide a brief overview of the different types of research (e.g. experimental, qualitative, cross-sectional).
  • Discuss the importance of using statistical methods to analyze research data.
  • Explain the different types of statistics that can be used to analyze research data (e.g. mean, standard deviation, t-test).
  • Provide examples of how to interpret research data using statistics.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to complete a small data analysis exercise using a handout with research data.
  • Go through the answers as a class and discuss the findings.
