Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the different methods for drawing conclusions in a research project.

Materials

• Examples of research projects
• Handout with examples of different types of conclusions (logical, inferred, implied, direct)

Warm-up

• Ask students to share some of their favorite research projects and the conclusions they reached at the end.
• Discuss the different types of conclusions that researchers can reach, and ask students to provide examples of each.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of drawing conclusions in research and explain that this is the final step in the research process.
• Discuss the different types of conclusions that researchers can reach, and provide examples of each.
• Distinguish between valid and invalid conclusions, and explain how researchers can determine the validity of a conclusion.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with a research question and some relevant research articles.
• Have the students use the articles to identify a conclusion that can be drawn from each article.
• Ask the students to discuss their conclusions with their group and explain their reasoning.
• Bring the groups back together and have them share their conclusions and discuss their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• Provide each student with a different research question and a set of relevant research articles.
• Have the students use the articles to identify a conclusion that can be drawn from each article.
• Have the students write a brief paragraph (3-4 sentences) explaining their conclusion and the reasoning behind it.

Closure

• Have the students share their paragraphs with the class.
• Ask the students to reflect on their experience of drawing conclusions in research and discuss any challenges or successes they experienced.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to draw conclusions in their research project.
