Figure 1 shows a rising trend in the prevalence of schizophrenia in UK society over time. This indicates that the condition is becoming more common in the UK.

                                                    Introduction

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects 1% of the population. It disrupts the way a person thinks, acts and feels, and it can lead to a range of emotional and social problems. The word schizophrenia comes from the Greek words schizein, which means to split, and phren, which means mind. This name is given because of the split or disordered nature of the thoughts and behavior of people with the disorder.

The disorder usually begins in late adolescence or early adulthood, but it can start at any age. It is not uncommon for the first signs of schizophrenia to be mistaken for the signs of drug use or a personality disorder.

The causes of schizophrenia are not known, but it is thought that both genetic and environmental factors play a role. There is some evidence that people with a family history of schizophrenia are more likely to develop the disorder, and that it may be triggered by some kind of stress or environmental factor.

In schizophrenia, the most noticeable symptoms are disturbances in thought and behavior. These may include:

                                                              ·          Delusions: A delusion is a belief that is not based on reality. People with schizophrenia may have a range of delusions, such as believing that someone is spying on them or that they are being controlled by aliens.

A person with schizophrenia may have just one delusion or many. Delusions are the most difficult symptom for family and caregivers to cope with.

A person with schizophrenia may also have hallucinations. A hallucination is when a person experiences something that is not real. Hallucinations can be auditory (hearing something that is not there), visual (seeing something that is not there) or tactile (feeling something that is not there).

How common are hallucinations in people with schizophrenia?

About 80% of people with schizophrenia experience hallucinations. Research suggests that people with a first episode of schizophrenia are more likely to have hallucinations than people who have had the disorder for a long time.

A person with schizophrenia may also experience disorganized thinking, speech and behavior. These symptoms can make it difficult for a person with schizophrenia to function in daily life.

Many people with schizophrenia also have low self-esteem and feel disconnected from others.

A person with schizophrenia may also have problems with concentration, problem-solving, and memory. These problems can make it difficult to hold down a job or finish school.

In addition to the symptoms listed above, people with schizophrenia may experience a range of emotional symptoms, such as:

                                                                                ·          Emotional withdrawal: People with schizophrenia may have difficulty expressing their emotions and may withdraw from family and friends.

A person with schizophrenia may seem indifferent or cold to others.

                                                                                    ·          Anxiety: People with schizophrenia may feel anxious and worry about things that are not important.

                                                                                      ·          Depression: People with schizophrenia
