Topic: Writing a Mission Statement for Theatre

Objectives & Outcomes

• Artistic spaces, such as theatre companies, need mission statements to guide their artistic and organizational vision. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to write a mission statement for our Production Lab class this year.

Materials

• Pen and paper for each student
• Examples of mission statements from various theatre companies

Warm-up

• Ask students to brainstorm what their ideal theatre company would look like. What kind of plays would they produce? Who would be in the cast and crew? What kind of atmosphere would the theatre have?
• Write their ideas on the board.
• Discuss the different factors that go into creating a theatre company, such as financial resources, audience size, and location.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a mission statement, explaining that it is a statement of purpose that guides decision-making and helps an organization achieve its goals.
• Review the five W's of a good mission statement (who, what, where, when, why).
• Ask students to brainstorm ideas for a mission statement for the Production Lab class. Encourage them to be creative and consider the unique needs and goals of the class.
• Review the ideas as a class, editing and refining them into a final draft.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in small groups to draft a final version of the mission statement for the Production Lab class.
• Have each group present their mission statement to the class for feedback and refinement.
• Bring the class together to review the final mission statement and celebrate its creation.

Independent Practice

• Have students use their newly-created mission statement as a guide for the work they do in the Production Lab class throughout the year.
• Have students regularly revisit and reevaluate their mission statement as they progress through the class, making any necessary adjustments.

• Review the components of a well-crafted mission statement and discuss how a clear sense of purpose can help an artistic endeavor.
• Ask students to share their mission statements and discuss what they learned from creating them.
